This came to me from Paradise Animal Rescue. If you have room in your home and heart for any of these animals, please contact them!

We sent out a plea early this week on behalf of the Marshall Missouri Vet Clinic asking for help in finding safe haven for 18 puppy mill survivors, and with the very generous response of so many (thank you - thank you - thank you), were able to locate foster care for 17 of the 18 the very same day of the original post.

Picture Perfect

You couldn’t ask for three better dogs than we had on this afternoon at the park. When one dog got up on the table I just knew I had to get them all up there and they just all seemed to settle in nicely. Attempts to get the fourth puppy on the other side resulted in quite near a disaster so we became satisfied with the three.

Seems that PETA is coming down on the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary for recuperating the Michael Vick dogs, the brutalized victims of his dogfighting ring. These people (at PETA) never cease to amaze me. If anything, they are jealous because of the money and recognition tied to these dogs that they didn’t get.

Anyways, read this great article in the New York Times that their Sports Writer, William C. Rhoden, wrote about the differences between PETA and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary:

What A Life.

I’m so happy! It seems like spring has come to LA…the birds are nesting and the sun is hot. It’s been a very busy time for me and the humans too. Work at the studio is very busy and the humans have started a thing called renovation in one of the bathrooms….it involves lots of banging and things moving about…I just stay out of their way! When I get time I love to lounge around in the cool grass.

Below is an article that was published in the Commercial Appeal newspaper on February 25, 2008. The article outlines some of the training and successes of the dog teams in DeSoto County. These dogs and handlers were recently trained by Highland Canine Training.

The Brazilian black Labrador dug furiously at the wet earth, slinging clods of dirt behind him, but this was no typical neighborhood canine looking for a buried ham bone.

Keisha?s new backpack and patch

Keisha’s new backpack from Ruffwear

Keisha got her new backpack yesterday.  I had ordered it last month, along with a patch.  The patch came weeks ago, and I like it a lot.  It says “Service Puppy In Training”.  I didn’t want a “generic” patch saying “service dog” and another saying “in training”.  I wanted something different.  I attached the patch to her backpack last night, and now it’s ready for her to use!

Many pet owners get frustrated with their dog for urinating in the floor when they are approached by someone or when you first get home to greet them. Many people feel that this is a house breaking issue, but the majority of the time it may not be. Also, if you are dealing with these types of issues with your pet, double check to make sure they do not have a medical condition.

A lot of times, especially with puppies we see what is called submissive urination. This is when your puppy or adult dog may urinate whenever you are a stranger approaches them. I know it’s hard, but you should be patient with this behavior and not treat it as a house breaking issue. This type of behavior is initially seen as a type of insecurity or intimidation especially for young pups. Socialization is the key when dealing with this type of issue. When my dog was a pup up until she was about 6 months old if any man with a deep voice spoke to her she would immediately urinate wherever she was. We made our mission to introduce her to any and all men we came into contact with and now she is about a year old and perfectly fine.

After the pup has a good idea of what you want him to do, begin to ease off using tidbits every time. Do not let yourself use tidbits as a bribe. It is very easy to fall into the trap of thinking that if you give a puppy a treat he will be good. But from the dog’s viewpoint, it looks like you are treating him as top dog and whatever he wants to do is okay with you. So only use tidbits when you are teaching a specific thing and only long enough to be sure he has learned it and associates the act with the word for it. Then ease off to the point of stopping the use.

Here is another free dog food recipe.

2 chicken thighs — or white meat
1 stalk celery — sliced thick
3 carrot — peeled and halved
2 small potatoes — peeled and cubed
2 cups rice — uncooked

Place chicken pieces in large pot. Cover with cold water (5 -6 cups). Add carrots, celery, and potatoes to water. Add salt to taste if you want. Cover and simmer on low heat about 2 hours until the chicken becomes tender. Add the rice, cover and cook over low heat for about 30 minutes until the rice is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. Remove soup from heat. Pull the chicken meat off the bone (MAKE SURE TO DO THIS, DOGS CAN CHOKE ON BONES), discard bones. Return shredded pieces to pot. Stir well. Let cool. Store in the refrigerator or freeze.
