Dog Training - Training Older Dogs

Of course, ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ is a myth. Like humans, or many other species, dogs learn new things every day throughout life. My ten-year old Golden is still mentally alert and eager to ‘play’ in new ways.

But, also like humans, learning new behavior is often as much a matter of unlearning old ways. Dogs do have a strong tendency toward habits, and modifying or extending those habits after years of repetition takes extra patience and focused guidance.

Therapy dogs, trained by Highland Canine Training, LLC are helping children in a new reading program at a local Charlotte-Mecklenburg School (CMS). The program is currently taking place at Newell Elementary School on Old Concord Road. Coyote and other Therapy dogs trained by Highland Canine Training, LLC will be joining the classroom once a week for an hour during reading time to encourage the students to read. Linda Taylor of Highland Canine Training, LLC conducts regular therapy dog classes as well as private instruction for individuals wanting to train their dogs for therapy work. These dogs often work in hospitals, assisted living homes and schools. Purebreds as well as mixed-breed dogs of all sizes and ages can be trained for this type of work. Linda stated that “Reading to the dogs is less stressful for the children, especially those who may be having trouble reading aloud. This provides the children an opportunity to hone their reading skills to an audience that will not criticize them or correct them if they make a mistake.”

We have recommended on numerous occasions for people to take up tracking with their dog, just as a hobby. Many pet owners believe in order to perform tracking with their dogs they must be bloodhounds, shepherds, or labs. But that is not always the case, especially if you just want to track for fun, nothing serious and hopefully involve the entire family. Yes, their are many dog owners out there that get into tracking on a much more serious note, and are involved in search and rescue groups, clubs, organizations, sport trials, or AKC tracking. This is a wonderful thing but some dog owners just want an outlet for their dogs energy! Tracking is an awesome way to achieve that, you not only are getting them exercise, they are also using their brains!

I am sitting at the airport, just waiting for my flight home on the way back from the Cleveland Pet Expo in Cleveland Ohio.

The Expo was great and I came out to support our Cleveland branch of Sit Means Sit Dog Training.

There were all kinds of vendors here, showing off every conceivable type of thing that is remotely related to anything having to do with dogs.

I did 2 shows both days on the main stage, and had a great time showing my young dog ‘Rex’ (17 months old) doing a variety of training things, and having the crowd come up and get involved as well.

Dog Training - Training Devices, Tools Not Substitutes

The creativity of trainers and those who supply them with additional tools is never-ending. To the new or casual trainer there appears a dizzying array of devices. Though many are useful, they shouldn’t be viewed as substitutes for training knowledge.

Before using any of the tools discussed below, be sure your dog is in good health. Even the gentlest of collars or training regimes can do harm if the dog has a skin sore or twisted dew claw.

Dog Training - Training the Trainer

Dog training philosophies vary as much as dogs and trainers do. Most professionals agree, however, that a large part of training dogs consists of training the trainers.

Whether those trainers are pet owners or professionals they need many of the same attributes. Most dogs are neither stupid nor intelligent in the same way humans are. But whatever their natural aptitude they require and benefit from consistency, repetition and a patient style of guidance.

With crime on the rise and America’s love for their dogs, purchasing a personal protection dog is one of the smartest things to do! We have found that many of our clients are simply uneducated on what makes a great protection dog for themselves or their entire family. Buying a protection dog is a huge investment with great return simply for the security and of course adding an addition to your family. First and foremost you must understand that having a protection dog as a new member of your family comes with responsiblity, liability, and educating your friends and loved ones. You most remember that they are a working dog and you and your immediate family may be able to pet and love on your protection dog, not just any person can, like they would be able to with your regular pet dog. You should be able to control your protection dog but never leave it unattended with mixed company and children. You will be surprised at the number of people who find out your new dog is capable of bitework and they act totally different, doing everything from being terrified to teasing your dog to see what it will do!

Our in-home dog training is the one of our fastest growing training packages simply because of the variety of affordable training choices you get to choose from without leaving your home. Our latest feature for in-home dog training packages includes a trainer coming to your home with or without the owner being present. For instance, we would evauluate your dog on the first visit and fill out necassary paperwork and find out what your expectations are form the training program. Once we decide if your dog will need basic obedience, advanced obedience, and/or behavior modification then the training begins. If you decide not to be present for the training sessions at your home then we can decide how many visits per week you would like for us to schedule your training!

Many times dog owners ask, “At what point should I give my dog a break during training sessions?” Unfortunately, the answer is that it depends on the dog and the method of training that you use. But the bottom line is that your dog does need a break during a training session even if it’s for 30 seconds or a few minutes. Your choices for breaks can vary, it can be letting them sniff around or go potty, playing with their favorite toy, or just sitting down on the ground and rubbing their belly. Some trainers are in disagreement that playing with toys are a break for the dog. Some believe that the dog is still in reinforcement mode. We believe that playing with their toys are a break as long as you are not forcing them to do obedience for their toy.
