Lori Lebda and Tami Bergeson have hit the nail on the head (in my case anyways) with What Dog Are You? Discovering Your Inner Pooch. This book, fresh from the printing press, lets the reader explore his/her traits, abilities and personality and associate them with a breed of dog.

Based on three quizzes, the “Pooch-onality,” Dapper Dogs,” and “Biscuits or Bones,” a number value is assigned to you. Each quiz results in a specific breed type and those three are your “puppy genetic makeup.”

Recently, I have receive a lot of phone calls and emails about using detection dogs at checkpoints. The handlers that I have been speaking with have wondered what the “rules” are when using drug dogs at checkpoints. The “rules” are simply this:

1. Drug checkpoints clearly violate the Fourth Amendment.
2. Checkpoints can be established to detect drunk drivers, illegal immigrants and to verify license and registration.

We as trainers find ourselves discussing this topic quite frequently with pet owners. But we find that many pet owners get confused on the actual diagnosis of the anxiety. For instance, from time to time, in the kennel we see those certain dogs that are escape artist, or drool and maybe not eat well the first few days of their stay in a new place. This does not necessarily mean that your dog suffers from separation anxiety, some dogs are just not use to the kennel environment and do not do well around all of the other dogs, new noises, and new smells.

So you want to go on vacation but don’t want to leave poor Fido in doggie-daycare and poor Fluffy at the kitty-inn… And who could blame you? Pets are part of the family so why shouldn’t they get to come on vacation, too?Whether you’re looking to take your pet on “vacay” or you’re moving and need to travel with pets, there are plenty of options out there for pet-friendly travel, transportation and pet-friendly hotels.

** First and foremost, before you leave make sure your pet is healthy enough to travel. Sometimes your vet may recommend he/she is not fit for travel based on age, temperament, health conditions, etc. Also be sure your pet has been properly vaccinated and is up-to-date on all other shots.**

When most people bring home their cute new puppies, the furthest thing from their minds is the stressful time of teething. Just as with babies teething, puppies will want to chew on everything they can get their mouth on. This can lead to total destruction of your belongings, but there are tried and true ways to help prevent this from happening, and help you and your pup get through the teething period with ease.

Many people bring home their new pup and leave them out to romp around the house when they’re not home. Inevitably, this leads to chewing on shoes, books, socks, the couch, and any number of other things. The best way to prevent destructive chewing is to crate train your dog. To do this, you will need a crate that is just big enough for your dog to turn around in. Make the crate a safe and happy place for your dog. Provide him with stimulating toys while he is in the crate. Crate training your dog will not only prevent destructive chewing, but will also aid in potty training and create a positive and safe environment for your dog to be when you’re not around. Some people think that keeping a dog in a crate when they’re not around is cruel. This is not the case at all. Dogs by nature like small, darkened places and tend to feel very safe in crates. Almost all dog trainers today believe that crate training is a necessary and positive part of your puppy’s development. If your dog is crated while you are not home, they will not have the opportunity to chew on your belongings and other harmful things such as power cords.

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I know its been several months since I’ve posted. I’ve been preoccupied with setting up my own business, and dealing with other things. I am still feeding my two dogs natural dog food, its a bit more work, but its much safer for them, and I don’t feel like I’m endangering their lives, like I used to when I fed them commercial food.

Russ Meets Little Dog

Our cat was so used to being the underdog of the clan that his confusion was obvious when he met Ru. While being held it seemed Russ thought the small dog an equal but on the floor our cat realized he was a bit bigger in weight than the visitor.

She?s a Jumper!

The leaves are now gone and the snow is blowing in but Corona sure took advantage of the leaves when they were here.

Not being able to contain this girl we had her tied to the tree but she had plenty of room to go bonkers.

It won’t be long before we have pictures of Corona in this years snow but we’re holding off until it the snow is too much to bear.

Happy Boxing Day

Twas the night after Christmas
when all through North Pole
Not a helper was stirring
Not an elf nor a troll.
The snowflakes were falling
Out the window with grace
In plans to have St Nicholas
Storm stayed for days.
