Dog Training - Training Styles - Part I

Contrary to popular belief, there are not as many training styles as there are trainers. Despite individual differences, people handling dogs fall into clearly recognizable categories. And no matter your individual style or that of your dog, there remain certain truisms.

The Too-Easily Frustrated

No activity apart from human childrearing requires as much patience as developing cooperative behavior in a dog. And most individuals don’t spontaneously possess that much. So, along with training the dog, self-training is usually necessary.

The Importance of Microchipping Your Yorkshire Terrier

Each year, Yorkshire Terriers go missing. Most of those are actually stolen, because these dogs are worth a great deal of money to a savvy thief. If you have not already considered Microchipping your Yorkshire Terrier, you absolutely must consider this immediately, and make arrangements to have this done.

On average, Microchipping can cost somewhere between $40 and $70, depending on the area where you live, and the microchip that you order, as well as whether or not you are injecting the microchip yourself or having it done for you. Over the weekend we took our family to Ringling Brothers and Barnum Baily Circus in Charlotte, NC and had a wonderful time. To our surprise the opening act was with dogs, it was great! The clowns used mostly the herding breeds in agility, frisbee, obedience, and pattern training using alot of directionals. My kids loved it, and I thought, “What a great way to show people how fun and entertaining dogs can be”. Hypoglycemia and Yorkshire Terriers

Different breeds of dogs have different health concerns, and of course there are also canine health concerns that affect all breeds. Small breeds, such as the Yorkshire Terrier however have a special health concern that most people associate with human beings, instead of dogs. This health concern is Hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia, in layman’s terms, means low blood sugar. Symptoms of Hypoglycemia in Yorkshire Terriers include coordination issues, listlessness, and seizures, although like most illnesses, your Yorkie may only display one or more symptoms of Hypoglycemia, and not all symptoms. Hypoglycemia is considered to be an emergency situation, and should be treated as such. Take your Yorkshire Terrier to the veterinarian immediately. He may lose consciousness, and without treatment, he may die.

Finding a Yorkshire Terrier Breeder

Anyone who has a female Yorkshire Terrier who has a litter is in fact a breeder of Yorkshire Terriers. However, this does not mean that they are a good breeder. There are good breeders and there are bad breeders, and for many reasons, you want to work only with a good, responsible breeder when you get your Yorkshire Terrier puppy.

A good breeder does not have accidental litters. All of the litters are planned in advance, and often, the puppies are sold before they are even conceived if the female has had previous litters for which there are pictures. Before breeding takes place, a good breeder will have the male and female checked by the veterinarian, and will also have them tested for genetic issues that may affect the litter.

Dog Training - No, YOU Stay!

Dogs have a significant capacity for training their trainers. Apart from making us wave our hands and bark odd words, we regularly fetch treats and run after tennis balls. Not useful to us, but the dog enjoys it.

To put things back the way they’re meant to be, assert your alpha status. One of the foremost methods is a frequent use of ‘the stay’. Just what it sounds like, the stay requires the dog to remain stationary, in place, while you move about. Just the reverse of the usual situation in too many cases.
