Spaying and Neutering for Yorkshire Terriers

In most cases, when you acquire a Yorkshire Terrier from a breeder, that puppy will already be spayed or neutered. There are many reasons why breeders spay and neuter the puppies before selling them. Even if your Yorkshire Terrier puppy is not spayed or neutered before coming to live with you, in most cases, the breeder will have a contract with you that require you to have the dog altered by the time that it is a certain age.

Which Type of Yorkshire Terrier Should You Adopt?

When you start looking at ads to find a Yorkshire Terrier, it is easy to become quickly confused. You will see ads that offer Toy Yorkshire Terriers, Miniature Yorkshire Terriers, Yorkie-Poos, Morkies, and even Parti-Colored Yorkies. Which one should you adopt?

First, let’s clear up some misconceptions. While there are numerous different types of Terriers, there is only one type of purebred Yorkshire Terrier. If a Yorkie is advertised as a toy or miniature, this does not mean that the breeder is breeding a special kind of Yorkie. This means that the Yorkie in question is smaller than average.

Over the weekend we took our family to Ringling Brothers and Barnum Baily Circus in Charlotte, NC and had a wonderful time. To our surprise the opening act was with dogs, it was great! The clowns used mostly the herding breeds in agility, frisbee, obedience, and pattern training using alot of directionals. My kids loved it, and I thought, “What a great way to show people how fun and entertaining dogs can be”. With practice, the tricks they were performing can be done right in your back yard for your friends and family to see!

Finding a Yorkshire Terrier Breeder

Anyone who has a female Yorkshire Terrier who has a litter is in fact a breeder of Yorkshire Terriers. However, this does not mean that they are a good breeder. There are good breeders and there are bad breeders, and for many reasons, you want to work only with a good, responsible breeder when you get your Yorkshire Terrier puppy.

A good breeder does not have accidental litters. All of the litters are planned in advance, and often, the puppies are sold before they are even conceived if the female has had previous litters for which there are pictures. Before breeding takes place, a good breeder will have the male and female checked by the veterinarian, and will also have them tested for genetic issues that may affect the litter.

Dog Training - No, YOU Stay!

Dogs have a significant capacity for training their trainers. Apart from making us wave our hands and bark odd words, we regularly fetch treats and run after tennis balls. Not useful to us, but the dog enjoys it.

To put things back the way they’re meant to be, assert your alpha status. One of the foremost methods is a frequent use of ‘the stay’. Just what it sounds like, the stay requires the dog to remain stationary, in place, while you move about. Just the reverse of the usual situation in too many cases.

Yorkshire Terrier Rescue Groups

When you consider acquiring a Yorkshire Terrier, you will most likely begin by searching out quality breeders in your area, as well as in other areas of the United States and Canada. However, you might want to consider acquiring your Yorkshire Terrier from a Yorkshire Terrier Rescue Group instead.

There are numerous reasons for adopting a Yorkshire Terrier from a rescue group. Most of the dogs available through a Yorkshire Terrier rescue organization will be adult dogs that somehow found themselves without a home. The reason for this usually has to do with the past owners living situation, and rarely has to do with any bad behavior on the dog’s part.

The dog training business sounds to alot of people like a very easy job. After all we work with furry little cuties all day and set our own schedule right…wrong! We have both proudly served as sworn law enforcement with a combination of 17 years experience and niether one of us knew exactly how “cut throat” this industry can be until we were deep in this thing. As a dog trainer you must first know how to train a dog and understand dog behavior (that is the easy part), you must also understand politics, have great rapport with people, and sometimes you must act as a counselor to many of your clients and students.
