Highland Canine Training has hosted several Canine Good Cittizen Certifications and also have several certified Canine Good Citizen Evaulators on our team. Most of our certifications have went really well with great participation, attitudes, and of course wonderful dogs. Our last certification was a little disappointing with the attitudes of some of our participants. There was complaints of having to wait and not beinf first in line to go. It actually sounded like elementary students complaining at the water fountain at school over who is next in line.

Weight pulling can be a fun activity you can enjoy in the comfort of your back yard or you can take it to the trials. It is simply about how far you would like to go with your dog. You don’t necessarily have to have a bully breed to practice pulling with you dog, it’s just an activity for you, your family, and your dog to do and it is a great way to burn off a little energy for the both of you.

For example carting is simply when a dog pulls a cart carrying a small load, for example gardening tools, firewood, or maybe a bail or two of hay. When you add more weight, it’s called “drafting.” At pulling trials you may see a dog carting or drafting with two wheels , four wheels, a travois (a platform dragged along the ground on two poles that support it), or a sled. Some drafting clubs are breed specific and others like the Rottweiler events are open to all breeds. I have learned that ARC offers three competitive levels: Carting Started, Carting Intermediate, and Carting Excellent.

Feeding Your Yorkshire Terrier

You wouldn’t think that such small dogs had such special dietary needs, but Yorkshire Terriers really do have special nutritional needs, and they are indeed very picky eaters.

Most Yorkshire Terrier owners do not purchase commercial dog food for their beloved pets. Instead, these special dogs are fed the same foods that people eat. Favorite foods include chicken and beef, as well as a variety of green vegetables, milk, and bread. All foods should be free of preservatives, organic if possible, and all meats should be thoroughly cooked.

Dog Training - Training Non-neutered Dogs

Not every dog gets spayed (removal of female reproductive organs) or neutered (removal of male organs). Whether through an intention to breed or other motive, many individuals leave their companions intact. Left with a full complement of nature’s hormones, these dogs can react differently than their surgically altered counterparts.

Males with the normal amount of testosterone tend to be prone to seek alpha (leader) status, and when exposed to a female in heat will often ignore commands. Licking behavior increases, the male will gently head butt a female in the neck, and eventually try to mount.

The Great Dog Food Scare is now one year away. In the first months a lot of websites and blogs were writing about this topic and many more people were searching for information to find safe dog food.

Menu Foods stock was sent into a free fall and faces more than 100 class-action lawsuits. Last month, many of the lawsuits in the US were consolidated into one class-action lawsuit.

The search is now over as is clearly reflected in the Google Trend. Pet food is also off the radar of regulators and other agencies.

No dog food can cure canine kidney disease and expensive prescription diets cannot prevent kidney disease either. However, when your dog is suffering from renal failure a specialized diet can both extend his life as well as improve the quality of life. When your dog has malfunctioning kidneys the activity has dropped below 30% before you notice the clinical signs.

Visit the kidney disease dog food diet page on Best Dog Food Guide to learn more about the symptoms of canine kidney disease.

Canine diabetes is becoming a lifestyle disease in dogs just like in humans. The risk for developing diabetes mellitus increases with age and weight.

Early warning signs include extreme thirst and increased water intake (and hence more frequent urinating), unexplained weight loss and depressed or lethargic behavior.

The usual treatment consists of strictly regulating sugar intake. This can be achieved by feeding a special diabetic dog food and feeding multiple smaller meals a day instead of one biggie.

Kyle from the USA posted the following question to ‘Best Dog Food Guide‘:

“I’ve been told dry dog food is good for my dogs teeth. Is putting water in his food bowl all the time going to take away from this?”

Well, the short answer is a plain ‘no’. I’m assuming Kyle is worried about his dog’s teeth and gums. The best thing to do is brush your dog’s teeth and you don’t actually need tooth paste; water alone will be fine. Throw him an occasional bone or raw hide to chew on.
