Dog Training - Housebreaking Your Puppy

No training is more basic for pet owners than that first important lesson: Do it outside!

Teaching your pet to eliminate outside the home, not in it, usually starts between six and eight weeks of age. Dogs as young as four weeks have been started on the program, but at that age few have the muscular control to succeed.

Like any dog training regimen, trainer patience is as important as the dog’s temperament. ‘Sit’, ’stay’ and other behaviors can often be learned in a few days. ‘Potty’ training typically takes weeks - sometimes as short as two, often a month or more.

Dog Training - Training Styles - Part II

Training styles differ, but some traditional techniques have proven their worth.

Training styles are sometimes divided into those that use both positive and negative reinforcement, or rewards and punishment and those that rely solely on rewards. Using the word ‘punishment’ naturally turns off many who want to treat their companion with care. Substitute the word with ‘discouragements’ and you have the more accurate sense.

Highland Canine Training, LLC is proud to announce that we will now be offering training and classes for the American Kennel Club S.T.A.R. Puppy program. This course is designed to develop well-trained, well-rounded puppies and adult dogs. The course promotes socialization and responsible dog ownership. We have a S.T.A.R. Puppy course beginning January 10th, 2009 in Mooresville, NC. We will also be offering these classes at later dates at our Matthews, NC and Harmony, NC locations.

To understand dog training it is necessary to have some basic knowledge on how dogs think, learn and behave. A puppy decides whether or not he is going to repeat a behavior by the direct consequence of that behavior. If I behavior brings about a reward, either from you or the environment, the behavior is likely to be repeated. Similarly, if a behavior brings about an unpleasant consequence, chances are good that the puppy will not repeat the behavior.

We recently had the opportunity to teach a three day search and rescue seminar in Meridian, MS. The three day course covered practical hands-on training as well as lecture on an Overview of Search Dogs, Training and Handling Search and Rescue Dogs, Basic Cadaver Training, Water Cadaver Training and Advanced Human Decomposition for Cadaver Dog Handlers. The three day seminar was a huge success with a great number of teams, handlers and states represented.

Officer Dan Holderman and K-9 Wulkan of the Butler Township Police Department recently graduated from their police canine handler school at Highland Canine Training, LLC. Within their first week back at work, the team had three successful finds. The news article below from the REPUBLICAN HERALD describes one of the finds. Congratulations to Dan and Wulkan. It's really sad when people buy a dog without putting any thought into it. They buy him or her for their kids birthday, and forget that the dog will be their responsibility for well over a decade.

For children, the novelty of a puppy often wears off, and the dog is then exposed to the most harsh of all fates - Emotional negligence. Here is a heartfelt plea from one of our canine friends:
