Each day, the role of working dogs in the United States becomes more demanding. Therefore, the level of training and certification for handlers and working dog should constantly evolve and become more progressive and challenging. Police Dogs and other dogs utilized for detection, protection and search and rescue should constantly be driven to be more proficient, adept and capable of effectively handling the tasks presented to them in the field on a daily basis.

The American Police Dog Tactics Association strives to promote effective and realistic training for todays law enforcement canine handlers. The American Police Dog Tactics Association also offers realistic, scenario-based certifications in the areas of detection, patrol, evidence search, tracking/trailing and SWAT applications. These certifications, unlike many others, are designed to test the abilities of not only the canine but the handler as well. Scenario-based certifications allow the handler to determine strengths and deficiencies in training and assist the handler in formulating a plan for improved performance in the field.

Seminars, training and certifications offered through the American Police Dog Tactics Association will be open to any law enforcement, military, search and rescue, or private detection dog handler. The training and certifications will be offered for dog teams that conduct narcotics detection, explosives detection, weapons detection, human remains detection, police patrol, building searches, evidence searches, tracking / trailing as well as Urban or Wilderness search and rescue operations. Special certifications and training are also offered for handlers who operate with SWAT, SRT, ERT or similar teams.

The American Police Dog Tactics Association also aims to promote networking among handlers and to provide a forum for an exchange of information and ideas.
