When it comes to dogs, some people will advise you to get a male, rather than a female, and in some cases, to get a female rather than a male, based on varying facts and myths. However, when it comes to Yorkshire Terriers, if you simply want a pet or a show dog, and you have no intention of breeding the animal, are you better off with a male or a female Yorkshire Terrier? Well, before you get the cutest puppy in the litter regardless of its sex, realize that there is a difference between males and females that you must be aware of, other than their sex.

Female Yorkshire Terriers are smaller than the males. Males are more aggressive than females, but if a female dog has a litter, she is actually more aggressive than any male could be. Some female Yorkshire Terriers are over protective of their litters, and this can become a problem.

If you have a male, you won’t have to worry about the animal coming into heat twice a year. However, if you have a female is spayed; this won’t be a concern in this instance either. However, if you have a female who has not been spayed, she will definitely come into heat twice each year, like clockwork, and it will last for about three weeks each time. During these three weeks, she will have a discharge from her vagina, and it can be messy.

On the plus side, however, a female Yorkshire Terrier is usually easier to train than a male ?even if she has not been spayed. On the negative side, you must be gentler with a female, because her feelings will be hurt more easily than a male.

Male Yorkshire Terriers are more protective, and more likely to bond with one person in the household, and that person will usually be female. A female is not as protective of her humans, but she will bond with more than one person in the household. Females are also better at socializing with other animals in the household.

Male Yorkshire Terriers may not only have a problem with animals of different species, but he will almost always have a problem with other male Yorkies, especially if there is a female in the home as well. At the same time, the males are more independent than the female Yorkshire Terriers.

As mentioned, the male Yorkshire Terrier is larger than the female, and naturally, he eats more. He is not only larger than his female counterpart, he is also physically stronger, and even if you compare him to a female of the same height, he will almost always weigh more. As such, male Yorkshire Terriers require more exercise than females do.

With this information, you can now determine which sex fits best in your home. Will you choose a male Yorkshire Terrier or a female Yorkshire Terrier ?or one of each?
