As melamine keeps popping up in corn gluten and rice protein all around the world, how can you be sure the dog food you’re feeding your beloved pooch is not going to kill him?

The dog food label should state the name and address of the manufacturer. Contact them and ask them how they can assure the safety of their products.

Which certificates do they have?Do they work with certified suppliers only? Are all feed ingredients labeled with a certificate that ensures quality and states the origin of the ingredient? From which countries are ingredients imported? Are all ingredients checked for quality and micro-organisms before processing them into dog food? Are end products checked before distribution?

When I asked my dog food manufacturer I was assured that no ingredients are used from China or any other country outside the EU.

As they are IFS, BRC and HACCP certified the Quality Assurance protocol used is the same as for production of human foods. Knowing this and knowing no Chinese rice protein is present in the Lamb & Rice meat burgers that Kensho eats, I feel better (though it’s not a guarantee).

The exact rules for obtaining the certificates the manufacturer mentioned are not clear to me. At the moment I’m researching more about quality assurance and measures taken after the pet food recall in the US. It’s one world and with the ongoing globalization the next recall may be just around the corner.
