Elinor Silverstein of North Tustin (Southern California, USA) started cooking for her dog in seventh grade. Her pet simply refused to eat dry dog food. And being a clever dog (apparently) he stayed with his strategy. She then decided to go and research foods and spices suitable for her dog’s digestion. Elinor is a true believer in the benefits of organic food and buys only pure and fresh ingredients at Whole Foods Market.

Starting this month, Elinor now teaches other dog lovers the art of canine cuisine. If you’re not anywhere near Tustin then you’ll have to wait for the release of her dog food recipe cookbook and products. Until then you can try this basic dog food recipe on your pooch:

1/2 of meal is protein – whole chicken or salmon1/4 puréed vegetables, except broccoli or cauliflower1/4 organic cooked brown riceAdd ginger powder, thyme and small portion of an apple

Directions: Mix all ingredients in food processor. Store in refrigerator until ready to serve. Before serving, pour small amount of boiling water over food to cook it.

Warning! Your dog may refuse a meal just to see if you can come up with something better. Make sure your dog is not just training you into buying the most expensive pieces of salmon and beef!
