We often receive calls from clients that are concerned about their dogs and children. Their concern is that either their dog knocking the kids down, barking at the child, growling at the child or has bitten their children or someone elses child. This is obviously a situation that should raise concern with any adult. However, we often find that the dog is generally not at fault in most situations. I have had cases where children have jumped on, stepped on or pulled on the dog and hurt it in some way, and the dog acted out to defend itself. For example, I once trained a Rottweiler that bit a child after the boy stepped on the dog while it was fast asleep. The dog awoke a bit the boy instinctively after being hurt and startled.

Another common misconception about Pit Bulls is that they are unable to get along with children. This misconception has brought many dedicated Pit Bull owners to get rid of their dogs when a new baby arrives home out of fear that their dog will harm the infant. On the other hand, there are many Pit Bull owners who excitedly bring their baby home without a single drop of worry about the infants safety around their dog. Neither response is accurate or reliable. Although it is a fact that dogs can hurt babies, it is also true that they protect babies. How you introduce your baby to your Pit Bull makes a huge difference on how well the dog will act around your baby.

In choosing a dog for the family, it’s a good idea we keep the children in mind. Some dogs are not tolerant of children and can be a threat to them. There are many breeds of dogs out there to choose from. Do your homework to see which one works the best with your family and especially your children.
By far the number one best dog breed for children hands down, would have to be, you guessed it, Labrador Retriever. This dog is well accepted because of its good nature. It is not generally aggressive or hyper. It is playful, easy-going, intelligent and patient. No wonder it is loved by the young and old. Because of its mild manner, it is first choice in working with the handicapped. It is has desire to please as if it knows its plight. The Lab is also a great pick if you have other animals. They are very accommodating. A well taken care of Lab can live up to 13 years. In order to reduce boredom in these dogs, they should be kept active. These dogs love playing in the yard or taking walks.

If you have a child, you’ve probably heard those familiar words, “Can we keep him?” Dog’s aren’t just a man’s best friend anymore; they’ve become the whole family’s friend. If you’re like any typical family, the children will probably spend the most time with your new dog. This is why it’s very important you teach your child how to take care of him. Here are a few dog rules to teach them:
