So you’ve got a new dog and you’re wondering what to feed him. The market is full of commercial diets, and you’ve heard that some people feed their dogs raw meat. What should you do?

Dogs are omnivores which means they require meat, fiber, and other nutrients to stay healthy. Generally, adult dogs need a diet that consists of 22-25% protein and 15-19% fat, although puppies, pregnant dogs, and active dogs will have different nutritional requirements.

Today I received the following dog food question from a UK dog lover via the Best Dog Food Guide - Contact Form.

“I feed my 8 week year old puppy chicken breast and vegetables with olive oil. Could you give me some tips of how much to feed him and what else to feed him? He is a Doberman, thanks.”

Below you’ll find the answer I gave him.

My STRONG advice to you is please feed your puppy a commercial dog food! If you insist on cooking for your dog then at least wait until he is full grown.

A little good news today! Dogs that were bound for the Philippines to be used as meat were rescued.

Today the Humane Society of the United States released a video with exclusive footage, including footage of a raid where investigators with our global arm, Humane Society International, worked with local police and animal groups to rescue 100 dogs bound for the dog meat trade. Many of these dogs were obviously people’s pets.
