Military dogs are dogs that are used to complement the various tasks that are needed to carry out a military operations. To some, this may seem to be contrary to humanitarian principles. But I look at it like this - This is how dogs first evolved - as a companion in hunting, and in fact, gun dogs like the Hungarian Vizsla are in use by even non military personnel.

This never stops. Here are a few news releases I’ve read in the past few days.
Natural Balance Pet Foods is issuing a nationwide recall of a number of canned products manufactured by American Nutrition. This action is limited to four specific Natural Balance canned formulas: Chicken Canned Dog Formula 13 oz , Beef Canned Dog Formula 13 oz, Lamb Canned Dog Formula 13 oz, and the 3oz and 6 oz Ocean Fish Canned Cat Formulas. They did this after learning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed rice protein concentrate used by American Nutrition contained melamine, a substance not approved for use in food.

I got more presents! That’s right, I’m spoiled. These are from my friend Lola, a really cute bulldog. I am addicted to tennis balls but Lola found some new toys that I really like. First, I got a frisbee called a Zogoflex Zisc. I had to give it a good sniff when I got it unwrapped.

A contact person from a hunters association in the USA had filled out the contact form on Best Dog Food Guide and asked me the following question on June, 23th 2007. For privacy reasons I have removed his name in this blog post.
I have read in one report that Purina Hi Pro dog food was not good for my hunting/show dogs. A fellow hunter recommended Purina One and said that the final cost would be about the same since I would feed less of the better food and also have less mess to clean up. Any ideas? Also is there any other independent research that I might read? Thanks.

Here is more information for my fellow pet owners: The recall of pet foods and treats expanded today to include dog biscuits made by an Alabama company and sold by mega-retailer Wal-Mart. Sunshine Mills Inc., is recalling dog biscuits that have been made with imported Chinese wheat gluten. Further, Menu Foods expanded its recall to include “cuts and gravy”-style products made between Nov. 8 and March 6.

According to API, the FDA is investigating a Texas laboratory’s finding of acetaminophen in dog and cat food. Horrifyingly, this is the fifth contaminant found in pet foods during the past 2 1/2 months. Acetaminophen can be toxic or lethal to pets. At least five dog and cat food samples submitted by worried pet owners and pet food manufacturers contained varying levels of the pain reliever.

Veterinarians warn about dogs slipping into the fleshy grip of the obesity epidemic, much like their owners. About 30% of the dog population is overweight. Fat dogs may suffer obesity-related diseases such as heart and circulatory diseases, joint problems and diabetes. Fat dogs are also more prone to respiratory problems, cancer, reproductive disorders and suffer a decreased quality of life. Overweight dogs need to be rehabilitated by: less calories from food and more exercise. It is that simple! A quick test for you to check upon your dog’s weight status is that it should be easy to feel the ribs and there should be no fat hanging from its abdomen.

Dog food labels show you the company and product name, net weight, list of ingredients, feeding guidelines etc. but not all ingredients are usually listed and also the country of origin of those ingredients is missing.
Foods are shipped all over the world because of huge differences in market price and decreasing shipping costs. But as the world gets smaller by globalization, the food safety issue gets bigger. Morals, ethics and standards for food safety differ.
