Isn't it the saddest thing when you see a lost puppy on the road? Those eyes were meant to be happy, not afraid. Let's learn from the author...
LOST DOG
I saw a little dog today,
And oh, that dog was lost;
He risked his anguished puppy life
With every street he crossed.
He shrank away from outstretched hands,
He winced at every hail --
Against the city's bigness he
Looked very small and frail.

The moment you decide to own a Dalmatian puppy, you need to start planning for his arrival in your home. Both you and your new family member will find the transition period much easier if your home is properly equip in advance of the arrival.
One of the first thing you need to prepare for the arrival of your new Dalmatian puppy is a crate. Every dog should have a crate of his own from the very beginning, one that he will come to know and love as his special place where he is comfortable and safe. The crate will provide an ideal setting; when you want him to be free, you can just leave the crate open. Otherwise, you can securely latch it and know that the pup is safely out of trouble. Also, if you travel with him, his crate can fit nicely in the car. A crate therefore is a very sensible and sound investment in your puppy’s future safety and happiness and for your own peace of mind.

Here are some tips on caring for new born puppies:
Newborn puppies require warmth, and can easily become chilled since its body is not used to producing its own body heat. If you leave the puppy with its mother, it should be able to stay warm. You also can assist the puppy’s mother by providing a kennel to lie down in, lined with towels warmed by heating pads. Be sure to place the kennel somewhere that is draft free.
If the mother has milk, you should let the mother feed your puppy. The mother’s milk will probably run out soon, so you need to train your pup to take formula instead. You should not use human baby formula because it will lead to indigestion and intolerance: you must the formula that is made especially for puppies.

When I woke up this morning…very early this morning…the kid was still here. Puppies sure do get up early! I like to sleep in myself because we go to bed very late. You know the humans are creative types that work better in the dark, BOL! Anyway, I was snoozing away when there was a big commotion. Jessy gets up ready to play…me; I like to warm up to the morning. So next thing I know the whole house is up and I can’t stop yawning.

Many dog owners make the mistake of giving commands in long sentences that only another human being would understand. You get certain inflections in the dog’s bark or whine, but only another dog understands “dog talk.” Why should you expect your dog to understand all the words you use? True, your pet will love to hear you talk. Still, it is your tone that reaches and pleases him.
In his lifetime a dog comes to recognize many words, but he can be a well-trained, obedient pet by knowing just a few. He must know: “Come!,” “Out!,” “Stop it!,” “No!,” and “Down!” To them, add “Walk?,” or “Want to go for a walk?,” “Get in your chair!,” “Go to bed!,” or some such command to direct action, usually taught with a gesture or by actually lifting the dog to the indicated spot. Of course, he soon knows “Good dog!” or “Bad boy.” If you think though that he “understands every word,” try bawling him out some time in a honey-sweet tone. That little tail will wag madly; it sounds mighty nice to him!

When you give a dog any command, you have automatically assumed a dominant role and put the dog into a submissive one. Standing is a somewhat dominant canine posture, whereas the Sit and the Down are submissive canine positions, so it is sometimes difficult to teach a naturally submissive puppy to Stand when told. Given the command “Stand,” many dogs will obey, but quickly lower their tails, ears and head - all submissive body language. Be gentle and patient. A perfect puppy Stand has four feet on the ground (that’s the hard part), but it’s also nice to see the head up and the tail wagging. Don’t worry if at first your puppy would rather be a clown than stand still. Eventually they all grow up.

Puppies and dogs learn new things or change their behavior only if the undesirable behavior is punished or the desirable behavior rewarded. We can reward a dog for performing certain tasks on command, such as sitting, lying down, or coming, with simple petting, affection, and praise. You can also use rewards for coming when called, for sitting when strangers arrive at the door rather than jumping up on them, or for going to rest on his bed when people are visiting.

After the pup has a good idea of what you want him to do, begin to ease off using tidbits every time. Do not let yourself use tidbits as a bribe. It is very easy to fall into the trap of thinking that if you give a puppy a treat he will be good. But from the dog’s viewpoint, it looks like you are treating him as top dog and whatever he wants to do is okay with you. So only use tidbits when you are teaching a specific thing and only long enough to be sure he has learned it and associates the act with the word for it. Then ease off to the point of stopping the use.

Training your puppy to go up and down the stairs is not difficult at all. In fact it can be time well spent together with your puppy and it definitely enjoy the session. When you puppy first encounter the stairs, it might be quite intimidating for it. So if possible, try to start your puppy training on a short flight of stairs. If you have no choice, you can try using only the first 5 to 6 steps from the bottom of the flight of stairs.
